Cooling Efficiency Comparison

Using a traditional cooling system, a 375,000 square foot warehouse facility required 22 25-ton commercial grade rooftop units, along with supporting ductwork, roof supports, gas lines and more. Using a Johnson Air Rotation® system required just four units and two air-cooled water chillers-with supporting gas and electrical feeds for the four units only.

Original Design
  1. 375,000 square foot warehouse facility with gas-fired, package rooftop units
  2. Project would require 22 nominal 25-ton commercial grade rooftops scattered around the roof as well as ductwork, roof support, roof penetrations, 25 gas lines, 25 separate electrical feeds, production shut-down for installation and helicopter rigging of each unit.
  3. Cooling load estimated at a nominal 550 tons
  4. Each 25-ton rooftop utilizes 7.5HP Evaporator fan motor, two 10HP compressors, and two 1HP condenser fan motors

Johnson Redesign Utilizing Heating and Cooling Air Rotation® Units
  1. 375,000 square foot warehouse facility utilizing four AR105 Air Rotation® units and two air-cooled water chillers.
  2. Cooling load estimate reduced to approximately 480 tons of cooling required.
  3. Each Air Rotation® unit utilizes only 15 HP per unit plus each unit utilizes a 3HP burner motor.
  4. No roof supports, penetrations, ductwork runs required.
  5. Site now requires only 4 gas-piping connections and 4 electrical feeds for the Air Rotation® units.
  6. Chillers require one power feed, supply and return water piping and associated pumping system.
  7. System could have also utilized DX Cooling coils with 4 air-cooled condensing units mounted in a remote location.
  8. Redesigned facility requires much less maintenance as equipment is more accessible and there is less equipment.

System Horsepower Comparison--Air Movement Only
  1. Rooftop HVAC Design @ 7.5HP per rooftop * 22 Rooftops = 165 Total HP required for project.
  2. Air Rotation® @ 18HP per unit * 4 units = 72 Total HP required for project.
  3. This is an approximate 56% reduction in required air movement work on this project.
  4. The Air Rotation® system also reduced required cooling tonnage by 12%.
